The emblem of Sporting originated in the summer of 1905, in conversations taken in Cascais between Holtreman Jose Roquette (José Alvalade), the cousins Jose Roquette, Anthony Rebelo de Andrade and D. Fernando de Castelo Branco (Pombeiro).

José Alvalade asks D. Fernando Castelo Branco (Pombeiro) to authorize the use of the lion rompante of his coat as a symbol of the club. Pombeiro gives permission, but asked that the fund is not blue, equal to coat. The four chose the green, a color that expresses hope of success of the new club.

In 1907 the House Anjos, Lisbon, presents the symbol: a circular emblem with a lion rompante on the Club's original word, with the initial word of Sporting Portugal left and the right, in silver, with a green background.
